Fifteen U.S. states require registration and labeling compliance for bedding and upholstered furniture. Historically, these laws were created to ensure quality and sanitation, prevent misrepresentation of materials used, and ensure consumers are properly informed of filling materials. Depending on your product type, different laws and licensing requirements may apply. The SRC team can help you navigate these requirements and manage registration of your stuffed bedding and furniture products.
Understanding Labeling and Registration Requirements for Bedding and Upholstered Furniture
When manufacturing or selling bedding and upholstered furniture in the United States, compliance with label law regulations is crucial. These labels, often referred to as “law tags,” inform consumers about the contents of the product and ensure transparency in advertising. There are many components to consider when creating a compliant law label.
- Law Label Size and Printing Standards
- Filling Material Descriptions
- Manufacturer, Importer, or Vendor Information
- Other Information and Label Requirements
- The law label should contain specific federal and state-required details such as size and/or net weight, Federal RN number, country of origin, and date of delivery
- Federal care labeling (e.g., washing instructions) must appear on a separate label, not on the law label.
- Restrictions on Design and Branding
- To maintain regulatory compliance no advertising or company logos including URLs or patent numbers are allowed. The label must be securely attached and visible to consumers at the point of sale.
- State Registrations
- Based on the product type, some states require bedding labels to be registered before proceeding with distribution. Additionally, annual registrations are required.
