Last week EPA released Bilingual Labeling Questions & Answers on its website to aid registrants in adding Spanish to their product labels. PRIA 5 requires all agricultural and restricted use non-agricultural pesticides to provide Spanish translation of key labeling information either on the container label or via a scannable link on the product label. Antimicrobials and other non-agricultural products, that are not restricted use pesticides, may opt to omit the translation from the label, but are required to provide a link to the product safety data sheet (SDS) in Spanish. On the FAQ and Bilingual Labeling pages EPA has provided the following table with deadlines for Spanish labeling requirements.

Other notable clarifications on the FAQ are:

  • Only the health and safety sections of the label are required to be translated and only end-use products must have the translation.
  • Changes to add label translation may be made to EPA via non-notification. QR Codes or other scannable links can be added via non-notification too if the web page only includes Spanish translation. If the page contains any other information, it will require a review.
  • QR codes or similar technology to access the Spanish text are acceptable in place of on-label translation. The agency prefers one web page/QR code per product.
  • Antimicrobial products and non-agricultural products may provide a link or QR code to a Spanish SDS in place of label translation.
  • Use of the Spanish Translation Guide for Pesticide Labeling is not required, but the translation must be “true and accurate”. SRC strongly recommends using the guide to avoid any potential translation issues.

EPA has noted on the FAQ’s page that this page will continue to be updated as additional questions arise. SRC will continue to monitor this page and provide you with updates on bilingual labeling requirements and deadlines.

Please contact SRC for assistance to comply with bilingual labeling requirements.
